Principles of Animation 1 (DGM 2620)

While taking this course, I applied all of my knowledge I had learned from previous art classes, Survey of Animation, and more to push myself to deliver the best product I could. I was assigned to be one of the lead Character Designers, as well as having nearly all of my concept art for the piece to be chosen as the final look and feel of the film. In this course I learned patience when dealing with peers as well as gaining the courage to speak my mind during discussions.

Concept Art

These next images are documented chronologically, from the initial design phase, to refining, as well as colored pieces of what the class had envisioned for the piece initally. This entire process was important for deciding on something that pleased the majority. Through designing these characters, I had to be patient and mindful of the opinions of others, and with every criticism there was a thoughtful discussion with me and the other character designer on what would should be included and what should be removed.

Reference Sheets

While developing these reference sheets, I had to learn how to accurately portray a character(s) to multiple people and in a way that my thought process would be understood. While these sheets are not perfect and need improvement, this was a good way to understand that others have their own unique way of viewing and drawing a character, as well as evaluating my own style and translating it to others.

Animation

Each student on average did about 14 seconds worth of animation, and below is my rough animation. In this process I got a better understanding of actually applying the principles I had previously learned for a complete end product that I am personally very proud of.
